General IELTS Writing
In the General writing test, you will be asked to write a letter. Here are some practise questions for you to have a go at.
REMEMBER:
- spends around 20 minutes on this task
- Write at least 150 words
- Is the letter formal or informal
You are taking a course at a local college. The deadline for your project was last week but you haven’t finished it.
Write a letter to your lecturer. In your letter
- introduce yourself
- explain why you haven’t handed in the project yet
- request more time to do it.

You recently spent a night in a hotel and had to put up with a great deal of noise very early in the morning because of a faulty central heating system. The manager promised to contact you regarding compensation but you still haven’t heard from him.
Write a letter to the hotel. In the letter
- describe the problem at the hotel
- explain what the manager had said at the time
- say what you want the manager to do.
You have heard that a developer plans to build a shopping centre near your home.
Write a letter to the council. In your letter
- say how you heard about the plan
- explain how you feel about it
- ask for more information about it
You paid a refundable deposit when you rented an apartment. You left the apartment in good condition but the Landlord won’t return your deposit.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter
- explain why you are writing
- ask for the return of your deposit
- inform the landlord of possible legal action.
A restaurant has placed an advertisement for waiters and waitresses in your local newspaper.
Write a letter to the restaurant, applying for the job. In your letter:
- explain what you are currently doing
- describe your suitability for this area of work
- say when you can attend an interview
You are due to start a new job next week but you will not be able to because you have some problems.
Write a letter to your new employer. In your letter
- explain your situation
- describe your problems
- tell him/her when you think you can start.
On a recent holiday, you lost a valuable item. Fortunately, you have travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost.
Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter:
- Describe the item you lost
- Explain how you lost it.
- Tell the insurance company what you would like them to do.
You want to sell some of your furniture. You think a friend of yours might like to buy it from you.
Write a letter to your friend. In your letter
- explain why you are selling
- describe the furniture
- suggest a date when your friend can come and see the furniture
You recently started commuting to work by bicycle and discovered that there is a problem with bicycle parking near the building where you work.
Write a letter to the building manager. In your letter,
- explain the reason for using a bicycle to commute
- mention what problems you have encountered with parking
- what you recommend to solve the problems
You are a current student of Loren Brusque University, studying Business Administration. You want to apply for the post of Quality Assurance Manager you have recently seen on the university’s notice board.
Write a letter to Mr. Walker, In your letter
- Give your reason for writing
- Tell about your education
- Describe your work experience and explain why you would be suitable for the job.
Write a letter to the manager of the HR department of a company requesting information about the interview that you attended but still waiting for results.

- describe the position you applied for
- why you think the interview went well
- why you need the result of the interview
Your company has recently introduced a new uniform for the staff. But you have learned that the staff members are not happy about it.
Write a letter to your manager about it. In your letter,
- explain why you think the staffs are not happy with the new uniform
- what you want the new uniform to be like
- and give some suggestions to handle the situation
Your high school friend who has moved to another country will be visiting your country for a month. You have arranged a party for him/her.
Write a letter to this friend. In your letter,
- give the date and location of the party
- say who are coming to the party
- and mention things that he/she has missed during his/her stay in another country
Your child is going on a trip to another country for a week. The school authority is looking for some parents who can join the trip. You are interested in going with the children.
Write a letter to the head of the school. In your letter,
- say why you want to join the team
- mention what you can do to assist
- also ask questions related to the trip
Your city council is planning to pull down one of the historic buildings in your town because they do not have funds to renovate it. As a citizen, you do not want it to happen.

- say what the importance of this historic building is
- mention why it should be renovated rather than pull down
- suggest a plan to raise funds and maintain the building in the future
You are a student at an English language school in London and you have been experiencing some problems in the flat.

- State your reason for writing
- Describe the problems and explain how you feel
- Propose a solution and ask the landlord to take action
You have just started a course in a college which has no sports facilities of its own. Write a letter to the manager of the nearest private sports club.

- ask some questions about the club e.g. facilities, members, costs
You are going on holiday next week and you need to ask your friend to watch your dog while you are away.
